Texas and Orlando November 2012 – Day 1,2,3 & 4

It’s Sunday evening as I type and I must confess I am elated. My man won, and spectacularly in my opinion. He drove magnificently; overtaking both Red Bulls, to well earned and thoroughly deserved victory. The crowd loved it and we screamed and whistled with the best of them.

I need to go back a few days though don’t I? We travelled to Heathrow Thursday morning in a quick and uneventful taxi journey. We dropped our bags at a line free T5 BA desk and made our way through security. We’d narrowly missed Jake and Eddie Jordan who also flew out of T5 that day. The airport was busy but manageable. Paul managed to get his new watchstrap adjusted (it looks really good, even if I do say so myself) and we browsed the designer stores. My only purchase was a charm from Links of London before we grabbed some breakfast. It was about 11:30 so a fry up was absolutely the order of the day. We didn’t actually go to the lounge as we spent our time in the shopping area. We eventually headed to our gate to and boarding was on time. The flight was full and as we’d hedged our bets by taking seats apart in the hope that someone would swap thus giving us our ideal combination Paul approached the guy next to him. He was a Brit, seemingly off to the F1, and swapped to the other window seat without question – we had our seats. The flight was smooth but we took a really high route over Greenland and down through the US to avoid a turbulent Atlantic. The flight was 10 hours so I amused myself with my iPad for most of it and Paul watched 3 movies. These were the Wedding Video, rubbish in his opinion, Batman, very good he says and Prometheus also rated very good by Paul “Barry Norman” Brennan. The food on the plane was mediocre. Paul had beef, which he describes as “OK” (I tried to get more out of him but no go). I had the cold chicken salad as the hot dishes really didn’t appeal. The chicken itself was nice but the salad was wilted and had odd components like grilled Mango!!! Afternoon tea was the usual on BA. 3 sarnies (prawn & mayo, cheese & tomato and chicken & rocket) and a hot scone with jam and cream. It was amusing watching the US patrons eat dry scone with no idea what the jam and cream were for.

We landed at 18:35, local time and got off the plane quick to get through immigration as we had a connecting flight. The immigration hall was just starting to fill and we got sent to the back of line 17. They were operating a system of lines at each desk and boy was 17 slow. I am not kidding, the guy took 5 to 10 minutes for each person. We saw those 20 to 30 people behind us in the main queue get though at other desks. The time was getting on and we started to worry about our next flight. Paul asked the queue attendant if we could move and she said we could join the back of any other queue. We then had the dilemma… see it through, with 3 people ahead or move to a queue of 5. We opted to move in the end and got through just before the guy who was in front of us in the previous queue. We hot footed to baggage control and got our cases then headed to the exit. Thankfully, the United check in desk was literally by the exit so we had plenty of time and checked in. We made our way through a very empty security and on to the gate for our internal flight; Houston to San Antonio. We had an hour to wait at the gate but boarding began on time and was very organised and swift. Paul had seat E21 and we had boarded at gate E21 which was printed in big letters on everyone’s boarding pass. You’ve guessed what happened next I’m sure…. Several passengers tried to huff him out of his seat insisting it was theirs; it said so on their boarding pass!! Paul politely pointed out that was the gate number and they each moved on somewhat embarrassed. We were also seated at an exit row and had to positively confirm to the flight attendant that we were willing and able to carry out the actions listed in the safety card in the event of an emergency. This didn’t quite work for the non-English speaking old lady next to me and she was promptly moved and swapped with someone more able!!

The flight was quick and we were on the ground by 9:50pm local time. Since Texas is 6 hours behind GMT we were definitely more than a little tired given we’d been up since 7am. We managed to get our bags quickly – mine was actually the first one off the plane which was a first in itself – and made our way to the Hertz shuttle bus. We narrowly missed one but another came along in 5 minutes and it only took about 5 minutes to get to the Hertz depot. As gold card holder our car was ready and waiting and our name was on a board to tell us which bay to go to. We got a silver Nissan (that’s Neesarn out here) Versa.

With trusty tom tom we got to our hotel (Hyatt Place) in about 20 minutes, after Paul munched his way through a Sonic burger and chips as he was hungry. It was 11:30 pm and we crashed out absolutely shattered.

We slept in on Friday until gone 10am as we needed to catch up on our sleep. We eventually headed out about midday and it was a sunny 68 degrees. We drove to downtown San Antonio to the river walk area. We walked along the river and to the Alamo. We got some pics although the cherry picker parked outside was a bit if a spoiler. We went into the main fort building, entry was free to this and the other buildings and grounds. I feel I should know more about the US historic place but Paul tells me Davy Crocket screamed like a girl when he was killed, what more do I need to know? ?

After the Alamo we needed to eat so headed into the shopping mall and to the food court. We opted for a philly cheese steak and curly fries – yum. We had a look around the shops (although can’t buy anything as we are at our 50lbs suitcase limit for our internal flight) before making our way around the corner to the Coyote Ugly bar (as in the movie). We sat outside and supped soft drinks. We were right on the river walk restaurant area and it was warm in the Texas sun.

We meandered back along the touristy river walk area towards where our car was parked. There were lots of young, formally dressed US Air Force men and women so we figured there must have been some sort of passing out parade.

We came back to our hotel and got changed for and early dinner. We’d spotted a Texas Roadhouse earlier so that was our selected destination. We got there just before the Friday night rush hour and managed to get a good booth table. Peanuts, sweet bread and obviously the perfect fillet steak – Texan beef is even more tender than Floridian I am sure. The meal was excellent and we came away very full. We headed back to the hotel for an early night as Saturday was our first GP day and we planned a very early start. We packed our things for the next morning and went to bed at 8pm!!!

The early night was the right thing to do as we got up at 6am really easily on Saturday. We managed to be on the road to Austin by 6:45 and with a really easy and traffic free journey got to the first COTA (Circuit of the Americas) signs in about 80 minutes. There was slight scary moment when we about 4 cars behind a coach as it turned onto the road down to the track. The coned off road was very narrow and the driver was clearly struggling. Despite taking it real slow he somehow managed to plough the back end of the coach into a traffic barrier. It ripped up the barrier and the back end of his vehicle. He stopped and that’s where we panicked. Being stuck whilst that was cleared would not be good. Whether the driver decided he didn’t care or whether his 50 odd F1 fan passengers applied some peer pressure I do not know but he suddenly decided to just carry on! The traffic management was certainly good around the track as we turned into the circuit, found car park F and parked, all within about 10 minutes. It was only about a 10 minute walk into the circuit so we were in by 8:15am.

Our first stop was the FanVison stand. Here we hired a TV type device that gives you commentary, TV footage, ride on board footage as well as all the relevant stats and figures. We took a quick look at the McLaren merchandise and then headed over to find our stand. We were at the far end of the turn 15 grandstand. We’d already seen plenty of places for ‘entrance only’ folk to get great vantage points with good views of the track so worth considering for the future. Our seats were row 13 so not too far back and row 1 really was trackside. The only downside was the fencing at trackside that was clearly going to impede photography. Our seats gave us a great view of the track from the end of the back straight (DRS zone) right through the chicane to turn 15. If it hadn’t been for the bridge to the right we’d have seen turn 3 and 4 as well.

We decided we’d watch free practice 3 and practice our photography. Sadly my camera is really not cut out for high speed sports but I still got a couple of shots none the less. Paul took a few shots but is yet to view them all. I’m sure he’ll have a couple to be proud of.

After practice we indulged in hot dogs and funnel cake and sat on a grass bank in the sun. After a brisk start at 8am it had become a nice day and being cloudless the sun was beating down.

We made our way back to our seats at midday for qualifying. Hamilton had put in some decent laps in practice and was at one point fastest but Vettel kept on pumping in even faster laps and was fastest in all 3 practices; by half a second on p3 which is colossal in F1 terms. It looked like pole was his for the taking and that this would be his race, the Circuit of the Americas would be his to dominate. Jenson lost power in Q2 and never made Q3 so it was all on Lewis – how close could he get to those Red Bulls? Quite close it transpires…two hundredths of a second behind Vettel and very nearly taking pole. He’d split the red bulls and yet again showed how mighty he is. Vettel fans watch out, it’s not over yet!

We’d seen on the COTA website that there were team signing sessions taking place in the afternoon with McLaren at 3:30. We figured there’d be a huge queue but thought we’d check it out anyway. There were loads of people already there and it was not even 2pm but there seemed to be no kind of queuing system. After wandering around and then finding a Marshall it transpired that you needed a wristband that were handed out that morning. We were gutted as we were probably there early enough to get one we just didn’t know that this was the system. With nothing else we wanted to do we left the circuit at about 2:30pm.

After a 90-minute journey back we chilled out in our room for an hour or so before going out for some dinner. We had spotted a Mexican just around the corner from our hotel all Pericos so decided to try that. I had fajita’s and Paul had enchiladas. It was ok but wouldn’t rush back to be honest.

We were planning another 6am start on Sunday so ate early and headed back to our hotel for another 8pm bedtime!

6am was relatively easy on Sunday too. I think the UK body clock is helping somewhat. We were out again by 6:45 and the journey was just as easy. We parked in almost the same spot as Saturday (freaky) and again were in the track by 8:15am. We decided that we’d take a wander around to the start finish straight. We walked past the expensive grandstands and at the end managed to get a good view of the grid. There were already ‘entrance only’ folk that had staked their claim to their spot. They’d obviously got in early but were rewarded as a result with a great view. We saw the VIP Paddock club seats and got some shots of the lights and the steep hill up to turn 1. I bought a Hamilton helmet key ring from a McLaren store on the way and proudly clipped it to my bag.

We meandered back to the central area and sat down on the grass. We had a good couple of hours before the drivers’ parade at 11:30 so sun bathed! It had once again become a really nice sunny day, so nice in fact that I am now sporting a red nose and Paul has a burnt neck! Paul tucked into a half-pound hot dog and I got my face painted with the F1 logo.

At about 11:15 we took our seats once more. The drivers’ parade was great with each drive being sat on the back of a classic convertible. Schumacher had a slight issue with his vintage Mustang so had to jump in with Kimi! We got some pics of the drivers and screamed and waved at Lewis and Jenson. There was lots of support for Sergio Perez with apparently almost a quarter of the fans said to be Mexicans. Apparently, the fan numbers were better than expected too. 65,000 on Friday, 85,000 on Saturday and today set to tip the 100,000 level.

After the drivers parade we saw a parachutist fly in with a huge American flag followed by a fly past consisting of an F16 and 3 other propeller aircraft that we couldn’t quite work out! There was also a Texas marching band and the obligatory national anthem before the race start.

The race got underway after the usual formation lap bang on time and being on the dirty side of the track Lewis lost a place to Webber. Ferrari had given Massa a tactical gear box change to force a 5 grid penalty and move Alonso up to 7th and the clean side of the track. It certainly worked as after a great start Alonso made it to 4th after turn 1. Jenson had a dreadful start, losing places to end up P16. We listened to the Sky commentary both days so enjoyed the familiar dulcet tones of Brundle and Crofty to guide us. Lewis certainly had the pace of the Red Bulls and we saw his overtake of Webber. The crowd were on their feet and he certainly had a lot of fans. The race unfolded with a fair amount of overtakes and battles, not least of all Lewis and Vettel. We thought he’d do it, then we figured 2nd was all he’d get. Then, on lap 42 he did it. We were on our feet again screaming – it was awesome. Vettel seemed a sore loser complaining about the overtake… but to everyone else it was an awesome move, outstanding driving and classic Lewis. Despite never getting more that 1.3 seconds ahead Lewis maintained his lead to a brilliant victory. An outstanding drive from a great world champion.

We watched the podium on the screen opposite us and revelled in the British National anthem. Martin Whitmarsh went up to get the constructor’s trophy; trophy’s incidentally designed and created by a Brit despite being designed to be recognisably American. We thought the Pirelli winners’ cowboy hats were a cool touch too.

We exited the stadium and made our way trough the crowds to return our FanVison set. There was a queue but we got though it in about 5 minutes. Pretty much everyone was leaving so we figured we would have to queue to exit. We got to the car and joined a line to get out. We moved nowhere for about 10 minutes and figured this could take some time. We saw a few vehicles, mainly 4 x4’s, taking a short cut through a ditch and to an alternative exit. After seeing one car make it Paul decided our Versa could do it. We picked our way through rows of queuing vehicles and headed for the ditch. A rear wheel drive truck ahead of us had already struggled and wheel spun so I was nervous but Paul held back then took a run up and floored it. We were through in seconds, no problem and thanked the Versa! We managed to then get out of that car park in about 10 minutes. There was a queue down to the circuit exit but it was moving and we eventually made it onto the highway at about 3:45pm.

The journey back was busy, traffic wise, but moving at a good pace. We made it back to within 3 miles of the San Antonio exits but then hit traffic. It was still moving and we got back to our hotel for 5pm. I washed my now smudged F1 logo off my face and we went straight out for dinner. We fancied Jack Daniels chicken so Paul found a TGI’s on t’internet and tom tom took us there (what did folks do before this technology?). The food was good and long awaited and was washed down with root beer, which we have drunk at every meal incidentally. I do wish they’d sell it back home.

We came back to our room about 7:30 and I’ve spent the last 2 hours typing this. I now need to pack ahead of tomorrow’s check out and flight to Orlando so I’ll save this for Paul to check over and post. Hope y’all enjoy now!

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 9

We were docked by half 6 when Paul got up to go to breakfast and he said there was a huge queue to get off.  The boat got cleared by half 7 and we planned to leave our stateroom at 8am when the queues would have died down.  We walked straight off as before and straight into the baggage hall.  After a bit of time to find our cases and wait in line we clear immigration and made or way to the rental car area to wait for the shuttle to Hertz. It was a bit of a tight squeeze so Paul managed to get the front seat but it was only a couple of miles so not too bad.  The driver was telling us about all the bush fires and now high risk it currently is.
At Hertz our car was ready (a Nissan Altima this time) and we were eventually on our way to Orlando by about 9am.  A quick stop for a McDonalds breakfast first then up to Downtown Disney.   First stop was to meet a random guy from Paul’s forum who had asked Paul to get him some maiden voyage caps.  We delivered the goods then headed over to marketplace.  I looked around the glass shop where I found another range of silver beads so bought a princess crown for my bracelet (I’m up to 7 now).  We then went into the World of Disney store where we managed to pick up 2 new cushions like our “never grow up” and “once upon a time” ones.  This time we got “believe in magic” and “be our guest”. Paul also got a new coffee mug with “Por favor mantengase alejado de mi cafe” on it.  It’s a play on his favourite bit from the monorail.   We then took a quick  look in the pin station before making our way to Prime Outlets.    It’s was a other glorious day and the shopping car parks we’re all heaving as the locals were out. We looked in Last Call Neiman Marcus and Juicy Couture but nothing caught my eye.  Afterwards we headed up to the Yankee Candle store where we got some small jars in gingerbread, Danish cookie  and apple pie.

We left Prime and made our way to Millennia. Today was our shopping day as we hadn’t had much time before we boarded the ship.  There was nothing in the sale at Jimmy Choo so we wandered to Tiffany’s. It was really full and doing a roaring trade.  We had to wait a while for an assistant to help us but eventually I bought a really cute Aladdin’s lamp charm.   It’s a Palloma Picasso piece and fits really nicely with my Disney themed jewellery.
We left Millennia and next stop was Florida Mall.  I needed to get some shampoo for mum, an iTunes voucher for Chris and some OPI top coat for myself.  We parked out end back of Dillards being vey lucky to find a space again.   There were no sales on anywhere that we could find so we went to Trade Secret for the nail stuff and shampoo. A brisk walk to Apple for the vouchers and then off to the food court to get some lunch.  It was busy but we got a table and got our Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches quickly.

With only a few hours left we decided to spend them at Animal Kingdom Kidani Village.  After a quick repack of the cases we sat out in the rocking chairs overlooking the Savannah.   We had changed into our jeans etc for the flight home and finally set out for the airport at 5:30.  We returned the car ok and dropped the bags.  Paul managed to move our seats to the extra leg rooms ones in Premium downstairs.  It meant we could enviously see the Upper Class cabin but at least we should be off first.  The flight was short at 7.5 hours as we had the jet stream carrying us.  The flight was ok but getting sleep was nay-on impossible so we arrived at 9:30 feeling tired and grumpy!

It’s now after 10 on Sunday night, we’ve watched the Grand Prix and I’ve finished this trips blog as promised.   Hope you enjoyed and until next time…. See ya!

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 8

It’s Castaway Cay day (or Castaway Key as it’s pronounced) which is Disney’s private Island. We breakfasted at 9 on the balcony and couldn’t believe our eyes: heavy rain pouring down and making the view of the Island merely a foggy, murky, grey nothingness!  At 9:30 the captain played all 7 of the ships horns; “When You Wish Upon a Star”, “Makes No Difference Who You are”, “Be Our Guest”, “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes”, “It’s A Small World”, “Hey Diddly Dee An Actors Life For Me” and “Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirates Life For Me”.  Soon after the skies seemed to be clearing and brighter weather seemed hopeful. We had planned to stay aboard and ride the Aquaduck whilst the boat was quiet as pretty much everyone will have gotten off.  We made our way up there in our outfits (Disney swim shorts and Aquaduck t shirts) and it looked dry… Not good.  We returned to our room to check our guide and saw it don’t open until midday.  It was 11:15 so we figured 45 minutes on our balcony would be more than acceptable.  To explain at this point what the Aquaduck is, it is a water ride in a boat around a tube that spans all around the boat above the decks. Half of it is a clear tube and half is covered.

As we sat on our balcony the weather really had improved.  We could see all of the island clearly and watched the jet skiers, the parasailers, and the peddle boat riders getting some good pics along the way.  Midday soon came so we headed back up to the top deck.  There was no queue so we headed up the stairs.  The boat is inflatable with seats front and back and grab handles on the side.   You climb in on a flat area then the ride assistant pushes the boat into the tube.  It was faster than I had imagined and much more vigorous. Every bump threw cold, chlorinated water in my face so I spent a lot of the ride with my eyes shut.  Unfortunately, my scream meant I got mouthfuls of water as well.  The straight areas in the clear tube were much more serene but there was not enough of this for me.  The ride camera was not working so sadly we got no momento pic.  Getting out of the boat was an art form as it stopped in the water in the tube, I needed a bit of a push from Paul.  I got out and headed back for our room but Paul decided to ride again. He said it went even faster with one rider.

We were both drenched and hung our wet clothes in the bathroom and on the balcony.    We got changed and made our way to deck one to disembark.  By now the weather was scorching sunshine again, you could not believe it had even rained a drop!   We meandered along the pathways taking pics as we did.  When we got to the centre point it was already 1:15 and we knew that the bar-b-que lunch ended at 2pm so we decided to get a tram to Serenity Bay (the adults only beach) as we wanted to eat there rather than the family places.  We got there and tucked into our hot dogs, ribs, chicken and coleslaw. We saw our dining room waiter, Ameet, serving there so we said hi.

We then wandered onto the beach (which was busier than January) and had a paddle.  The ocean was pure turquoise and was warmer than January.    We wanted to go out to the observation tower so set out on our trek. It’s actually a bike path but we elected to walk. By now the heat was sweltering, even Paul complained how hot it was so you can imagine how I felt.  It was about 1.5k out to the tower but there were water stations along the way so we got there ok. We climbed the stairs and felt particularly underwhelmed at the view!  You could see the ship in the distance but other than that it was scrub land and some sea.  After a few photos we headed back down and back along our pathway for the 1.5k return walk.  When we made it back to the centre of the island it was about 3pm so we found a bar and settled down with a piña colada and a shandy.  We got a nice breeze and cooled off and we watched the swimmers and snorkelers in the water around us.   All aboard was about 5pm but as no one stays on the island everything starts closing at 3:30 so it can be packed away and taken back on board where necessary.   We thought we might as well make our way back to the ship as it was now about 4pm so got the shuttle all the way back.

We got an hours rest in our room and I managed to blog day 7 which Paul has just posted here at the airport which is where I am writing this. I may not completely finish by boarding time but I promise I will finish the trip when I’m home for you.    We also got our Vinylmation back in our room which is just as good as before.  We’ve got different signatures too like Woody, Jessie and Buzz FromToy Story, Phineas and the Ferb, Jake, Aladdin and the Genie.
Our final meal was back in the Royal Court and we took the Vinylmation to shoe Adam and  Hayley.  On the way to the restaurant we spotted Cinderella so grabbed a quick photo opportunity. We also saw Donald Duck and had our pic taken with him.  As I walked up to him (or her, as it must be) I said “you’re never too old huh?” and got a resounding “no” hand gesture from Donald.

The starters at dinner were poor.  3 of 4 were sea food and the other goats cheese.  I skipped and went straight for soup which was leek and potato. Paul skipped both starters and soup and salads.  For main course we both opted for the beef wellington and Paul got given double helpings as he’d skipped starters.  It was nice with really tender beef.  For dessert Paul chose the baked Alaska which was a slice of a bigger dessert not a meringue mound that was expected.  I had the chocolate decadence cake and we both had our usual cup of Tetley afterwards as well.

We headed straight back to our room after dinner to get packed before the show.  Cases have to be outside the room by 10:30pm so we hurried to pack. We made our way to the theatre about 8:15 for final show time.  The final show was a medley of characters and songs with a brief appearance by a magician (who was not very good). No Tinkerbell appearance on final night although we had seen her at Believe on the previous night – it’s a small green light that somehow flies over the theatre and really looks like Tink.

After the show we hurried back to the room to complete packing and put the cases out, we had just 20 minutes to do so ahead of the Disney trivia quiz at 9:45.  Adam and Hayley joined us at the end which helped us to score 13 out of 20. Not good enough to win as a very loud group next to us scored 16.  After this it was bed time as we would have an early start on Saturday for debarkation day.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 7

Another sea day starts with another breakfast on the balcony but before I go on there are a couple of things Paul wanted me to mention that I have missed out.  First is that we watched the move Derby O’Gill and the Little People which is what O’Gills pub is named after.  It is an odd movie with a young Sean Connery playing an Irishman who is to replace Derby as the Lord of the Manor’s handyman.  Derby falls down a well and ends up in leprechaun land and the story is mainly about him and the king if the little people. Like I said its a bit odd.  The second newsflash is that we booked another cruise on our way into dinner the other night.   Now that  sounds like we did it on a whim but it is something we had been considering for a while.  It’s also something that gets full so no last minute deals would be possible so the 10% on board credit in the next best thing.   It’s a transatlantic crossing on the Disney Magic for its Mediterranean repositioning.  It sails from Galveston, we get a stop at Castaway Cay then 6 nights at sea followed by stops at Madeira and Gibraltar before docking at Barcelona.     Hold on, gotta stop for a bit, Paul has just thrown a cup of tea and a cup of coke all over the the place….

Right, operation clean up complete so where was I?  Oh yes, we booked our transatlantic.  The sail date is 18th May 2013 and the boat is Disney Magic as I think I said.  That’s the first Disney ship and smaller than the Dream and Fantasy.

The only other thing to note is a few more fish extender gifts we have received.  We’ve had a cookbook, some craft type book that says Mickey and a bag of “stuff” to make something.  I think the idea was so make a character and the bag had material, ribbon, glue etc.  We elected not to get creative so if anyone wants to have a go when we get back…feel free.

So back to Thursday. We began by getting a couple of sun beds on deck.  I blogged for a while and we lay in the sun (ok I may have been in the shade). At 1pm we made our way to O’Gills for 80’s tune trivia.  We scored 32 again, exactly as before and yes they were completely different questions. This wasn’t enough to win but I did have a shining moment of glory by being the only person to get the band that released “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”.   It was Tight Fit and not only was I the only one to get it correct I was only the second ever person to get it since the Cruise staff guy had been doing the quiz (no idea how long that is though!). After the quiz we went up to Cabanas for some lunch.  We got a table outside at the back of the boat and watched our wake as we travelled along.

After lunch it was more trivia, Disney tune trivia. We know we’ll never win this as being a Disney cruise there are plenty of Disney freaks on board; yes way more that us!!  We scored 27, again matching our previous score. Not sure why we’re so consistent but hey.  It was now about 3:30 so we decided to spend some time on our own balcony to get some peaceful time.  I blogged the remainder of St Martin and St Thomas and Paul posted them.

Dinner was to be a table for two tonight as Adam and Hayley were at Palo.  We were back in Enchanted Garden and the menu was Captain’s Gala Dinner.  This meant a fair amount of sea food including the lobster tail.  Sadly Paul felt a little tender after the piri piri prawns at lunch so he opted for a simple romaine salad with ranch dressing.  I had the aged prosciutto followed by the mushroom soup.  There’s little point me even saying what Paul had for mains, yep, you guessed it, the sirloin.  I had the venison which is expensive, or is it deer? (gedit?). For dessert we had the chocolate lava cake which our assistant waiter (Israel from Chile) highly recommended. It was good and a scoop of ice cream made it all the better.  After the food we got a couple of pics taken in front of the fountain in the restaurant before heading off to the show.  We were still a little early so mooched around the the shops to kill time where Paul bought some pins for his collection. The show was Believe, which we had seen on Dream in January.  It was about a dad who doesn’t believe in magic and how, after rubbing his watering can, the Genie takes him on a journey where characters show him the real magic.  There are lots of songs as well and it is a really good production.

We exited the show at about 9:30 and went to Ohh La La for a drink – it was empty in there    We only had an hour as we planned to complete the 50 movie quotes trivia in O’Gills at 10:30. We were tired and it seemed to take forever to get though all 50, especially as there were loads we didn’t know.  I think we scored 52 out of 100 in the end (marks were for film plus actor) which was pretty shabby.  We wandered along the promenade deck back to midship and headed for bed.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 6

Our next stop was St Thomas and we docked at about 8am. We’d moved our breakfast back to our usual 9am time so settled in on our balcony with our tea and pastries.  As we munched on a croissant, all of a sudden another Cruise ship sailed right past to dock in front of us. It was the Carnival Glory.  Shortly after this we also saw RCL’s Freedom of the Seas arrive, so after being the only ship in port at St Martin we figured St Thomas could be busy with 3 big ships in.

We got off the ship at about 11:30 am in the end.  The dock was busy and the weather was scorching. It was very humid heat as well and not particularly comfortable.  We had tickets for the Skyride cable cars but decided to take a trip downtown first.  We boarded a taxi (these are open sided minibus type vehicles that hold 12 to 18 passengers) and went into town.  The heat was exhausting so we went into shops to get a blast of the aircon (not that I minded at all of course).  My first purchase was a silver bangle with a star fish on it.  We bartered a little and got a good price.  All this usual shops were there which is predominantly jewellery.  I did get a colour change nail varnish from Del Sol and then we went into Diamonds International.  I had looked at some earrings the previous day that are changeable from cluster studs to drops and I really liked the style and concept.  I looked at them again and this was the last pair in store.  Paul didn’t think they we that good value for money and at an offer price there was no bartering to be done.  Paul did acknowledge though that I would not get the change concept elsewhere so I splashed out.  They are only a quarter carat (tcw for both) but they do sparkle and look really nice.

After this we decided to leave town and head to the Skyride.  We got in a taxi but were the first aboard so being a 12 seater and a per person charge he naturally wanted to fill up. The traffic was again heaving and getting about in a vehicle was slow.  We did ask the driver to drop us directly at Skyride which he did so that worked out well.

We had seen a queue at Skyride as we passed on the way to town but thankfully this had all gone now so we only had to wait a minute or so before the next set of cable cars came around.  They were not that big but took 8 people, although we had 6 adults and a stroller in ours.  The journey up took about 5 minutes and you could see down the hillside to the port and beyond.  When we got off we went up the stairs to the highest point. The view from here was partially obscured though by the cable car system. We headed back down and to the cafe area where the views were much better.  We took the obligatory photos, had a quick look around before deciding the make our way back down. There is really only  a cafe up there and since our food is all free on board we figured we’d eat back on the boat.  We walked back to the boat which took about 10 minutes and was blisteringly hot.  We went straight up to deck 11 and got some food.  Paul tried the burger whilst I had tuna and chicken caesar wraps.

We had a DVC members meeting at 4:30pm and given that this would take us up to dinner, we went to our state room and quickly got changed before making our way to the Tube lounge for our meeting.  I took a Pina Colada with me to help me along.  The freebies were the same as we had already been given but we grabbed another A4 folio as they are really quite nice.  The main point of the meeting was to sell add on points but they also got us into teams for a bit of a challenge.  We didn’t do too well as the challenges were about how many Disney watches your team had or how many memberships cards (and as you didn’t need to show them we didn’t take them). The final question, which relied on ability,  was to work out the points needed for an Animal Kingdom Concierge room.  Our team worked it our correctly in seconds but we then waited whilst all other teams got is wrong repeatedly and were given an eternity until they did get it right.  As a result, they won given they had Disney watches in the previous round.  Needless to say we were less than impressed.     Apparently though, Animal Kingdom lodge has been voted best resort in North America.  That’s pretty neat given its our home resort.  I do want to stay there next year.

We came out and looked at our photos in Shutters before dinner.  We liked the pirate one but not the others and oddly had a completely strange family pic in our folio.  We had been told to head to Animator’s Palette earlier so we did.  We saw our table mates outside and waited with them.  Telling us all to be early was ridiculous as it created a huge crowd and queue and yet they didn’t open the doors any earlier!   We took our seats then the first thing we had to do was draw a character.  There is a paper with an outline on it ( ie head, torso, legs, arms) and we each got a marker felt tip.  We set about our creations, remembering the rules of no writing or letters at all.  We added our name to our work and handed it in to our waiter.  During dinner there were clips of Disney movies playing on the screens with accompanying music.  We started with an entree sampler (the only thing to have) which was prawns, tuna and melon with ham.  After this there was a popcorn soup. It sounded odd so we all had to try it but sadly the verdict was not good.  Our whole table hated it so we told our waiter to let the chef know!  Mains for us were lamb and sirloin (Paul’s staple diet here!).  The dessert choice was also very limited to either banana bread pudding or a sampler of chocolate mousse, cheesecake and tiramisu.  Paul had the sampler and I had the bread pudding, which turned out to be a tiny portion.  It was really nice all the same, so good that  Hayley had seconds.  As soon as we had finished it was time for the grand feature we had been waiting for.  All of our characters come on screen and are animated.  They dance along the screen and even interact with Disney characters on screen; Paul’s creation danced with Pinocchio for some time.  It was awesome.  Very clever tech and really well produced.  We got a few pics of our characters dancing too.  At the end of the show all our names are listed in the credits on screen as well and we got our drawings returned to us with an official Animator’s stamp on them.   Now surely everyone reading this is thinking how awesome a Disney cruise is??!!

After dinner we went to the lounges at the back.  The show was a hypnotist and neither of us were really fussed about watching it.   Instead we went to Ooh La La and had some champagne cocktails.  We chatted to the bar staff (who were and Essex girl and an Irish girl) and also spoke with a very glamorous American couple from California. Paul also had a cocktail made for him but the Essex girl called a cake.  It’s got Amaretto, cherry liqueur and coke in it which makes it taste like a cherry bakewell.   He loved it but we ere surprised that none of the Americans knew what bakewell tart was.

At 10:30 we wanted over to O’Gills pub for the pub quiz.  Another cocktail was ordered to help us along although we scored pretty poorly it has to be said.  By this time we were both weary so headed back to bed.   We didn’t bed down til midnight and Paul set his alarm for 3am as he was going to get up and take photos of a deserted ship.  I heard it go off and him leave (now there’s dedication to your art) so I spread out and slept some more.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 5

So we arrived at St Martin about 7:30am. We had breakfast ordered for 8am as we needed an early start having planned a trip over to Maho beach.  Before breakfast Paul did another round of deliveries to our fish extender group.  Today is pirate day so we gave chocolate coins, a pirate pack for the kids (containing an eye patch, a telescope and some sweets and stickers) and a booklet on how to be a pirate.  This includes then pirate code and the rules of Parley.  After our toast, pastries, donuts, tea and juice we got off the boat at about 9:30.  After a few photos of the ship we found the Hertz office which was right at the port.  We had pre booked a car so after the paperwork we got on our Toyota and set our sat nav to Maho beach.  We had planned this trip for one reason, to be on the beach (which we think is the only one of its kind in the world) where a 747 jumbo jet will land right overhead, and I mean overhead as the landing runway is literally the other side of the beach.  It only took us about 30 minutes to get to the beach, despite some heavy traffic.  We parked and made our way to the beach bar.  The arrivals are all listed on a chalk board and the KLM jumbie was due at 11:20. It was about 10:30 and there were a few smaller planes due in so we could practice our pics on them.  As the first one came in I took side on shots and Paul went right underneath the flight path.  It really was close and we got good shots.  Sadly, we haven’t been able to share any pics on this blog as we have previously as the Internet connection is just about ok for uploading the text but would not handle images.  We will try and post some when we return (if I remember!).

I made my way down to the beach to join Paul.  As we stood under a 757 jet that came in  the noise and the wind from the jet engines are incredible. There are actually signs up warning of danger of severe injury and even death from being in path of jet engines but still crowds gather to do it!  In the UK and the US the area would definitely have been fenced off for safety purposes I’m sure.

After a few small and mid sized planes we saw the lights of the 747 approaching. Everyone was gathering with cameras and videos. It really was quite amazing, and actually a little scary as the jets did physically push you back.  The plane was so close that in my pic my lens wasn’t wide angle enough to even get it all in!  We did both get some great shots though and Paul got a great pic of everyone looking up with cameras taking their own pics.

After the jumbo had landed it just started to rain so we headed back to the car.  As it was only 11:30 and we had the car for the day we decided to take a quick tour of the Island.  It is half Dutch and half French and we drove all around both sides.  After a quick stop to get a shot of the boat we eventually got back to port at about 1:30.  We didn’t really want to go into town so we had a quick look at the shops that were around the port before getting back on board.  By this time we were hungry so we headed straight up to deck 11 for some food.  They have hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, crisps, cookies and fruit all up on deck served all day.  We opted for hot dog and chips and went into the quiet Cove to eat it.  We noticed that the guitarist was playing one deck up on this cruise; we had written on our comments card last time that it kind of defeated the idea of a quiet area so whether we influenced the move or not, who knows.

After our late lunch we then got seats up on 12 where I blogged with my Piña Colada as you read earlier.  I managed to finish all of day 3 by 3:50 which worked out perfectly for the  Pirate trivia at 4pm that we had decided to do.  The questions were about some Disney pirate films as well as questions about Treasure Island, real pirate names and other stuff.  With 5 questions to go we were in second place so tried to go for the win.  It was not to be sadly, and we ended up in second at the end.  There are no prizes for second on Disney (unlike Royal Caribbean) so it was a case of so near yet so far.  We left the trivia and went back to our room to get ready for dinner.

We were back at Royal Court for dinner and being pirate night we donned our pirate t shirts.  The menu is Caribbean pirate themed. We had pot stickers to start, these are pork parcels and are really nice.  After this I chilled melon soup followed by jerk chicken. Paul had the sirloin steak with extra sauce which our waiter is now getting used to.  For dessert we had rum soaked chocolate cake.  Again, a good meal all round.

After dinner there was no show but the main theatre we showing the movie “The Avengers” in 3D.  I wasn’t overly fussed but Paul wanted to see it so we went in.  It’s over 2 hours and sadly we had to endure lots of noise. There were people with what must have been the worlds loudest rustling bag which went on for a good 5 minutes.  There were also kids crying, folks chatting and people leaving throughout.  The movie was ok, I think we both felt it could have been shorter but the content was as expected.

Since it is pirate night, this is the night of Buccaneer Blast.  Disney are the only Cruise line allowed to have fireworks at sea and whilst on a boat they are not quite up to Magic Kingdom standard they are still fab.   Before the fireworks there is show on the pool deck stage. It starts Captain Jack Sparrow, who abseils down the funnel onto the stage.  The premise is a gauntlet that the pirates fight over and eventfully Jack wins and pointed the gauntlet to the skies to start the fireworks.  We got a pretty good view from between funnels, managing to see the show and the fireworks clearly.  After the fireworks are done there is a deck party.  It is quite cool to see everyone dancing under the stars on the deck of a ship at nearly midnight.  It is also still perfectly warm enough to be in just t shirts.

We eventually turned in at about midnight, taking a cuppa down with us to enjoy before bed.  We read our St Thomas brochures and supped our brew before bagging those zeds.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 4

Monday saw us off for our posh brunch at Palo restaurant.  We got ready in our semi posh togs, Paul in trousers and a shirt despite it being hot and sunny, and headed up to the restaurant.  It’s at the back on the 12th deck with great views out to sea.  We we looked after by Milos from Croatia and were seated in a booth table towards the back of the restaurant.  Milos showed us the the food, which consisted of pastries, meats, cheeses, seafood, hot dishes such as chicken or risotto , pizza, omelettes and eggs benedict.  There was also a dessert table with strawberries, tiramisu, mouse, cheesecake, brownies, cakes and probably much more.  There was certainly no shortage of food.   We both began with eggs benedict which was really nice.  The egg yolks were really yellow and very tasty.   We were served a complimentary mimosa with our breakfast as well as coffee and water.  For second course we had some buffet items of pastries,  cheese and Parma ham.  Paul also opted for a frittata with onions, peppers and Italian sausage.  I was getting full by this point with my sparrows eating habits but still managed some dessert.  The chocolate covered strawberries are a fave of mine and were yummy.   Paul was due to meet someone he was taking pics of at 11:45 so we only had just over an hour for brunch.  We could have stayed longer and there was no rush to move us on (despite us not being able to get an 11:30 reservation yet still being at the table at this time). We paid our 40 dollar bill and headed back to the room to get changed.

By the way, as I know you like to hear where I am as I write, we are currently up on deck 12, I am supping a piña colada and Paul is on ice cream number 2. We’ve been ashore today but more of that when we get to it, no jumping ahead!

After brunch Paul’s model was not ready so we went to O’Gills Irish bar for 80’s tune trivia.  We did pretty well scoring 32 out of 40 with some awesome answers such Tarzan Boy (although we couldn’t remember it was by Baltimore) Toni Basil and Culture Club. The top score was actually 39 and our 32 only got us 4th place.  We then headed up to deck 12 to get some sun.  We sat out an I blogged to complete day 3 for you.

By now it was almost 3pm and time for Disney tune trivia in La Piazza bar.  This consisted of naming the tune, the movie and answering a bonus question.  We did ok on some but then got Cinderella confused with Sleeping Beauty with her changing dress and 3 good fairies.  We only scored an average 31 out of 45 and one team got all 45 points (although we reckon that must have cheated). Paul had more photo bookings at 4pm so we made our way back to our room and he gathered his gear. I opted to stay in the room and found the shopping talk on Chanel 9 so settled in to see what they recommended.  To be honest it was the same old same old but I still enjoy it. Paul got back about 5pm with some shots of a female teen and family of 4. There were some decent ones in there so hopefully all will be pleased.

We got ready for dinner (casual attire) and headed off to Enchanted Garden. It’s my least favourite of the restaurants.  It’s is based on the gardens of Versailles but there are no plants and it’s a bit plasticky – not up to usual a Disney standards in my mind.   We started with tomato soup and a romaine wedge and followed with prime rib and sirloin steak.  We ordered loads of extra gravy much to everyone’s amusement.   Hayley and Adam had spent the day watching films on funnel vision whilst chilling out on deck an had already ridden the Aquaduck.  We plan to ride this on Castaway day as most people will have gotten off so it should be quiet.   After choosing desserts our waiter told us he had brought the wrong dessert menu out so we need to choose again.  Poor old Hayley had her heart set on the bread pudding.  We eventually went for passion fruit meringue and Sacher torte. It was ok but this is one of the weakest menus we believe.

After dinner we went along to Skyline for a drink.  We didn’t have long as we had to get to the show but Paul had a tequila concoction with a plastic glowing souvenir ice cube(!) and I had an Absolut Pear on the rocks.  When we arrived we were in St Petersburg but it changed to London where even Big Ben appears with the current time, and keeps time until we move to another city.  If anyone’s not following this by the way, the whole idea of Skyline is that the skyline view though all the windows changes to a new city every 15 minutes.  Windows are actually screens with panoramic views of a city that have moving cars, lights etc. it’s awesome tech.

After downing our drinks reasonably quickly we walked the length of the ship to the theatre (located at the front whilst the main bar areas are at the back) and took seats on the very back row (thus avoiding having the backs of our seats kicked which had happened the previous night).  The show was called Wishes and the premise was 3 senior year kids at Disneyland for one last time before college.  They wished for the ride of their lives and where whisked on an adventure where they met lots of characters and sang along to some classics including, Hakuna Matata, I Wanna be Like you, I’ve Got No Strings, Zero to  Hero, Kiss The Girl and When You Wish Upon a Star.  So, can you name all the movies theses songs are taken from?  It was a good show and I was seated next to a retired lady from California who was doing her knitting.  We chatted (about knitting amongst other things) and she told me she doesn’t like cruising!  She was there to help look after a couple of 5 year old twins with their parents. What a nice lady.

After the show we went back to our room and read up on St Martin and the shopping guide. We considered the movie quote trivia but it was on late and after we’d sat down we really couldn’t be bothered with going out again.  Plus we had a reasonably early start to get over the the airport at St Martin where we would experience a 747 flying a few feet overhead.  But more of that in my next post.  For now I am off to pirate trivia….

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 3

Sunday morning saw room service breakfast arriving at about 9am.  It was the usual pastries, muffins (with grape jelly), doughnuts, juice and tea.  We ate it on the balcony where it was a little breezy but warm enough.  Shortly after we’d finished, our state room attendant turned up to say hello.  We gave him a gift (the same as we had out together for the fish extender group) and in return he gave us an awesome limited edition print from the maiden voyage signed by Don Williams, the artist; we were over the moon with it.

We left our room at just after 11 and set about delivering our first set of gifts for our fellow fish extender group.  We had 13 state rooms to visit so we certainly got some exercise walking up and down this 1115 foot long ship.  Sorry, but I need a short interruption here as we just got the ships horn playing “When You Wish Upon A Star”. One of the best things about the Dream class of Disney ships is the range of cool ships horns playing classic Disney tunes.  Anyway, back to delivering.  Along the way we bumped into a Canadian couple in our group but other then that we delivered anonymously.  We also stumbled across Pepe the king prawn’s room (from the muppets). There is small door, numbered 5148 & 1/2 and decorated as if it were his.  I guess its not for everyone but I love all this Disney fun stuff and attention to detail.   After this exercise we made a quick stop to see Michael at the DVC counter and got our membership goodies.  These were a pin, an A4 folio & pen and a couple of baseball caps. Oh yes, and we got our welcome home magnet for our door.

We then decided to go and get lunch (well we are on a cruise so lots of eating is obligatory).  We went to the Royal Court restaurant (which I think I called Royal Palace in an earlier post.  It was Royal Palace on the Dream but has been renamed Royal Court on the Fantasy for some reason.  We haven’t yet found out why).   This is the only restaurant with a full service at lunch and we opted for a turkey melt toasted sandwich with crisps and coleslaw. It was really nice all washed down with Coke and Sprite.

After lunch we went out onto the Promenade deck where I blogged day 2 (I commented on the surroundings in an earlier post). It was nice to just relax and the weather could not be better. I am actually writing this entry from the top deck, 12, in the adults only sun deck at the front of the ship.  The weather is still good but there is a sea breeze so I need to be really careful about not burning.

Anyway, back to yesterday. We chilled out on the promenade deck for about an hour before we were due to go and meet our fellow fish extender group.  There was a quick stop at the atrium to get some snaps of the Disney Princesses and then onto meet our group. Paul naturally knew more about them than me as he is the forum member but I did my bit and socialised.  Paul had offer to take picture of anyone in the group who wants them so a few were talking of arranging that.    After this we, and a couple of others from the group, went to do the ships tour.  We had done this on the Dream and it was really good as you get to learn loads. This was was almost identical being a sister ship but was still good all the same.

After the tour we headed over to the future cruise dude as we want to book a transatlantic from Galvaston to Barcelona next May.  His computer was down so he had to take details by hand and will send them back to shore (very backward considering some of the tech on board).  We then got an ice cream for up on deck 11 and sat and watched the end of the funnelvision film which was Brother Bear.  At 4:45 Paul had his first photography appointment to take shots of a little girl fresh from the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique. I stayed in the room and blogged some more before getting ready for dinner. It was for al night so we had to make an effort 🙂 .  Paul retuned, with some shots of his model who had a sailor outfit on and some Dorothy shoes, and also got ready.

We went down for dinner and had to queue to get into Animator’s Palette.  There we several photo points around the atrium including one with the Captain (who is actually Italian but we’re not worried, apparently they’re are no crew with families on near by islands on this trip). When we finally got into the dining room, our table mates were already seated and we had a table really close to a screen which we were pleased about.  Crush (the turtle from Nemo for non Disney fans) did his usual routine as we ate, teaching us the turtle way to live which is “sweet dude” and “totally awesome dudettes”. For starters I had a black truffle and cheese pasta which was really nice.  We then both had baked potato and cheese soup with bacon bits which we’d had on the Dream so knew it was gorgeous.  For mains we both had the Angus beef with wasabi mash.  The food was really good and Crush had gone through his usual interaction routine with various tables so we figured we would not be the lucky ones and ordered dessert.  Just then Crush came to our screen and started talking to the guy in the white shirt, which was Paul.  The conversation went something like this….

Crush:Hey dude, like what’s that around your neck?Is that like, a tie?
Paul:Yes it’s a tie
Crush:Loosen that off dude, your on vacation
<Paul loosens tie and undoes top button>
Crush:That’s better dude, you’re on vacation and you need to like, totally chill out
<Crush swims on his back to demonstrate chilling out then swims away>

I so wanted Crush to interact with us, it is very clever tech, so I was happy.

Desserts consisted of white chocolate cheesecake and cookie ice cream sundae. The food was good but were really full afterwards.  Since they only serve coffee at the end of dinner we had taken our own tea bags so we got some hot water and had a nice brew after dinner – lovely.

We then went back to our room (to get my cardie as the theatre is always cold) and then went for a look around the adult Europa bars before the show.  Ooh la la had the bubbles in the mirrors which did look stunning and Skyline seemed to be in Budapest at that time. We didn’t really have time for a drink as the theatre gets really full so we made our way there. There we loads of people around and free drinks as it was the Captains cocktail party.  We got in a lift and as the doors closed a little voice said “my mom and dad are still out there”. It was a young girl of about 8 I would guess.  Paul quickly pressed the doors open button at the next floor and she got out. Paul told her to go back down one floor and she just looked back at us with a sad, lost look.  Even I could not have left her there so we both got out and set about finding mom and dad. She had started to get teary now so I asked her name, which was Chloe, and promised we’d find her folks.  She knew they were headed to deck 11 so I waited with her whilst Paul went to check if her folks were still down a deck.  Just then she spotted her dad, who was legging it up the stairs and she ran to him like Linford Christie, bless her.  All was well so we made our way to the theatre.  We took seats in the circle and it filled up completely around us.  The show was Aladdin, which was pretty much a cut down stage version of the film.  It was very well produced. The magic carpet flying scene was excellently done and the Genie was a definite crowd pleaser.  The magic carpet was also a really good acrobat; its hard to explain and I know that sounds weird but it looked really good.

After the show we were both tired, Paul especially as he had woken up the previous night with aches and pains.  We got some hot chocolate and Coke from deck 11 and went to bed.
Before I sign off this time I will just let you know what we have received so far from our fish extender group. We’ve had lots of sweets, some magnets, some lanyards, a couple of torches and an Edinburgh calendar.  We think our personally designed post its and luggage tags are the best so far!

Right, I’m off for Disney tune trivia…

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 2

We needed to be up early on Saturday as we had a tight shopping schedule before we boarded the boat.  We ended up being about half hour late somehow but eventually checked out just after 9am.  The Caribe Cove apartments were definitely much quieter then the Bahama Bay ones.

First stop for us was McDonald’s in Disney on Osceola Parkway.  We sat outside eating breakfast and it was really hot and sunny.  We’d noticed since we arrived it had been quite humid heat but it was still nice to be outside and catch the rays.

After brekky we were off to Downtown Disney.  I want to go to the marketplace World of Disney store to get a couple of Disney charms for my bracelet (they are Chamilia, like the Pandora style). I already have Tinkerbell, Cinderella’s coach and a star bead so added Eeyore and a Mickey symbol spacer to my collection.  I really wanted a Mickey charm but not one of the dozen or so we tried would go on my bracelet.  My bracelet is actually a pandora one so not all the Chamilia charms fit.  I also bought a Cinderella cushion before we headed of to the Art of Disney to look for another Vinylmation for character signing.  We we still running late against schedule (yes we still have these carefully planned despite it being a holiday!) so we were rushing around a bit.  There were no 9″ vinylmations in the store so we decided that despite time constraints we would go over to Westside where the is a Vinylmation shop as it turned out so awesomely last time.  I wait in the car and Paul ran in.  He managed to get the glow in the dark green one so that should look cool when it’s signed up.

I know haven’t quite got to us being on board yet but I feel I need to tell you at this point that I am sat reclined on a steamer on the promenade deck with the sun on my legs. There are wispy clouds in a blue sky and the sea is calm – lovely!

So, where was I?  Ah yes, we’d done at Downtown Disney so headed over to the Florida Mall.  I needed to get some Bare Escentuals make up as its way cheaper over here than in Blighty.   We parked out the back of the M and M’s store and walked through it to get to Sephora.  I picked up my make up and some night cream and we let.  Parking so close and getting to the store quickly meant we actually made some time up on our schedule so all was good.

We left Orlando at about 11:30 to head to Port Canaveral.  It was a beautiful day to drive down and the roads were clear.  We dropped our bags at the port and there was quite a queue of people to embark.  We needed to drop the hire car off though so left to do that.  Hertz was only about 3 miles away so we filled up with gas and returned the car.  The shuttle back got us to the port about 1:20 and the queue had all gone.  Embarkation was hassle free (despite an officious woman trying to stop us using the empty non US citizens lane) so we were on board by half one.  We were announced, as is Disney cruising protocol, and first job was to go straight to the Royal Court restaurant to change our dinner seating to early.  We had been on wait list but nothing had come through.  We managed to change it easily and also booked a brunch appointment at the Palo restaurant.  This is one of the chargeable restaurants on board.  Even for brunch the dress code is no shorts, jeans or flip flops!

We then went to our state room to drop off our carry on luggage.  We had a quick drink and then went up to Cabanas (the buffet restaurant) to get a quick bite to eat.  After this I had a spa appointment for a manicure so we made our way to deck 11. The spa area was really busy as people were booking treatment. My therapist was Kadina from Jamaica and the treatment consisted of cold gel then hot stones with scrubs and oils. I’d brought my own lacquer so my talons now match my toes.  As soon as the manicure was over it was time for muster so after a quick look around the adult quiet area up on deck 12 we made our way down to deck 5 to our muster station.  Our station is actually in the Buena Vista theatre so we at least had comfy seats out of the crowds and humidity. We did have a slight worry that in an actual emergency watching a movie was not top priority but the drill did show us we were right next to a lifeboat so we should be ok!

After muster we had a bit of a wander around the ship, looking at the gallery and photo editing area before going back to our stateroom to get ready for dinner.

Our cases had all turned up by now and Paul managed to unpack but I left it for a while just in case of ruining the nails!  A quick change, wash and brush up and we headed off to Royal Palace.  I had found our table when we were in there earlier so knew it was a table of only 4 and as we were first we awaited our table mates.  They turned out to be fellow Brits!  A very young couple of newlyweds from Bagshot who were on honeymoon.  Adam and Hayley were their names and Hayley was the big Disney fan.  They were a really nice couple and we shared a few of our Disney experiences with them.

The food was good, escargot for me and shrimp cocktail followed by French onion soup for Paul got our starters underway.  For main I had the rack of lamb and Paul opted for the beef sirloin. We made sure we left room for dessert and had the Grand Marnier Soufflé.   It was nice to have a good meal especially for Paul after all his pre-cruise dieting.

After dinner we headed for the shops.  I’d already decided I wanted the new inaugural Dooney and Bourke bag so made a beeline for them. I also got another charm which was a cruise ship, exclusively sold on board so was a must have really.  Paul got some hats for a guy back at work and we also got the Fantasy and Castaway Cay Vinylmations (to go with our Dream ones).  We took our goodies to our room before heading to the theatre for the show.  We sat in the circle as ever and watched a weird kind of show about a family on board.  It was almost a bit of an advertisement or information guide to what’s on board as it followed the family and their antics during their staged vacation.  It was ok but we know there are better shows coming.

After the show we went up to the pool deck to look at the moon.  It was a full moon and also the closest the moon gets to earth so it’s really bright and clear to see.  Paul got some pics of it.  By this time after an early start and hectic(ish) day I was shattered so opted for bed.  I unpacked everything first then snuggled down.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise May 2012 – Day 1

We arrived at Manchester airport extremely early, even after a McDonald’s breakfast stop our rush hour contingency was not needed. The airport seemed quiet and we dropped our bags quickly and headed through security. No queues and no bag searches although I was selected for the random full body scanner.

We had a brief look around the shops but made no purchases (I know what you’re thinking, did I feel ok?). Despite our gate being advised as 206 we saw the Virgin jumbie at 203 so sat here and chilled. There was no one around and it was almost eerily quiet. There were a few folks at 206 who clearly seemed undeterred that there was no plane to take them anywhere. After an hour or so we went to get some food. With a late flight (2pm) it was lunchtime so Paul was hungry. This took us up to boarding time so we headed back to the gate. By this time is was heaving, no idea where everyone had come from!

We headed straight for the priority boarding line which meant the main queue was held back to let us on (people must just love us – not!) and made our way to our seats. We were upstairs in Premium Economy on the front row. As the cabin filled we found ourselves next to a family with a baby which filled us with dread.

The flight itself was ok. For an Orlando flight is was really short at just 8 hours. There were minor bumps as we reached the eastern seaboard but nothing to warrant the belt sign going on. The baby was reasonably behaved although the parents were most annoying being really loud. Paul quickly donned his acoustic 3’s to get some peace! Paul watched Mission Impossible 4 and listened to music and we both played the logos game on the iPad for quite a while; Paul finding my lack of logo awareness highly amusing!

We landed ahead of schedule and got off the plane as soon as we could. A route march to immigration was then met with horror as we saw the entirety of the Air France jumbo still queuing. It took ages to get through and the bags had been going around the carousel for an eternity. We picked them up quickly, got through customs and headed up the escalator. A couple of mins for a tram and we we on our way to get the car. Paul had opted for Hertz gold service so no rental desk but straight to the car lot. There was a small booth and a screen with Paul’s name and a parking bay number. Given the immigration delay this speedy service was appreciated and was excellent, I highly recommend it.

Our car is a Nissan Versa (or as Paul needed to pronounce it to the agent at Sun Pass; a Neessarn). We left the airport about 7pm which having landed at 5:30 was a worst in years.

We made our way to Premium Outlets as we had to pick up my watch. We stopped briefly at Marc Ecko for Paul to get some more polo shirts and also at Prada where I decided to treat myself to a new bag (made up for the lack of airport shopping already). We then headed to Tag and got my watch.

We stuck to our predictable routine after this and ate at TGIs (Jack Daniels sesame chicken strips and some fries went down well, although there was a problem with the soda in the soft drinks, it was really bitter). A quick stop at Publix for essentials and then we headed to our hotel.

It was 10pm by the time we checked in so given the 5 hour time difference we were getting tired. We headed to our room and pretty much went straight to bed.
